Blackboard Staff Development Sessions (Internal)

The intention of these sessions is for identified individuals to provide good practice solutions to commonly asked scenarios. Please note, there is seldom a correct answer, we as a team need to work to a consensus and provide consistent and appropriate good practice.

Sessions: All sessions will be held in the Hawaii Suite, ILRT

  • A topical space to link the curriculum to current affairs: Wednesday, March 07, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00 - lead: Andy
  • Online submissions: Tuesday, April 10, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00 - lead Hilary
  • Supporting small group presentations: Wednesday, May 09, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00  - lead: Hilary
  • Using diagnostic testing to help seminars: Tuesday, June 05, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00 - lead: Dominic
  • Including the virtual expert in your lecture: Tuesday, June 26, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00  - lead: Dominic
  • TBA: Tuesday, July 24, 2007: Time: 14:00 to 15:00  - lead: Hilary

The current scenarios are …

Scenario 1: Online submissions

An academic has approached you to help implement an online submission process. This needs to include informing them of the essay titles, providing the assignment cover sheet, the marking criteria and a previous marked example. You also need to devise a means of informing them of key dates, such as the final date for the draft submissions (to be emailed to the markers)

Finally, the assignments will be marked in Microsoft Word, using track changes and the marked scripts and grades are returned electronically.

The department are very anxious to maintain the principle of anonymous marking.

Scenario 2: Supporting small group presentations

Students are required to present their worked solutions to the class as a group project. To help facilitate this process we’d like to use Blackboard.

The group size is 5 people, and they will need space to communicate and collaborate. As well as a method by which they can submit their final presentations.

Scenario 3: A topical space to link the curriculum to current affairs

The academic requires a space whereby she can make a regular weekly update which is where she will relate the curriculum to current affairs. The academic would like to ensure that students can leave comments, questions and observations as she is keen to use this material in her lectures

Scenario 4: Using diagnostic testing to help seminars

The academic runs a very large undergraduate course which has a large number of seminar groups (10 in total), and numerous staff (5 seminar leaders). He wishes to implement a small diagnostic test (3 questions) which is released after each lecture (10 lectures in all).

The intention is that he’ll e able to report the outcomes to the seminar leaders (their group performance and the class average) and communicate any required actions to the seminar leaders.

Scenario 5: Including the virtual expert in your lecture

An academic is very keen to include a “virtual” discipline expert within their lecture. The exercise should last about 10 minutes, however it is very important that this is a two way process, whereby the students can ask questions and get responses. While the sessions also need to be recorded and made available on Blackboard afterwards.
